| I’m so grateful for the generous donations of so many people towards my £5,000 goal. They’ve come from far and wide (next door neighbour to good friend in South Island, New Zealand), and in varying amounts (£12 from Peter, who is a pensioner with a note saying he wished it could be more, and over £500 from an incredibly generous ex-boss). Its not the amount, but the support that matters. Besides Peter’s ‘purchase’ of that 1 hour could make all the difference. If I get stuck I’ll think about his donation & that’ll get me going again!
To celebrate my 50 years on the planet, and to say a big ‘Thank You’ for the amazing second life I’ve been given since the life-threatening bowel cancer diagnosis 4 years ago, and to allow myself to believe that I can achieve anything I set my mind to, I’m challenging myself and fulfilling a dream by trekking to Machu Picchu in Peru next year.
Not something I was thinking of doing, but when a flyer from ‘Beating Bowel Cancer’ landed on my mat, and I glanced at a photo of Machu Picchu on the front page, I just knew this was where I was going! Machu Picchu is one of those places I’ve dreamed about going to, and oddly enough I was reading a book that’s set in Peru, and the chapter I read that night was about the main character going to Machu Picchu: That very same evening there was a documentary about Macchu Picchu - so someone was telling me something!
It will be an amazing way of celebrating being alive, being 50 and being able to give something back to a charity that makes a huge difference to so many bowel cancer patients and their families, my own included. Because of my diagnosis I nagged both my brothers to get checked - both were found to have the same disease (at different stages), but because they were caught early & received prompt treatment, they are both now fit and well. Its important to realise that recovery and healing from bowel cancer is possible with early diagnosis. In September last year my beloved father was also diagnosed, and is now making a good recovery from his surgery. So that’s 4 of us now in my family. No wonder then, that I’m inspired to continue raising money and raise awareness to conquer bowel cancer. Because I got the diagnosis I helped to save the lives of 3 members of my family.

I need to raise a minimum of £2,900 for this 10 day trek in May 2009 (although I’m aiming high & going for £5,000)
That’s 240 hours divided into £2,900 = £12.00 per hour!
